Roma is one of the most visited cities in the world. Each year, every day, a huge number of tourists come to see the attractions and the monuments that make it so famous. When you arrive in Rome there are a lot of places you have absolutely to see. One of these are the Spanish Steps. They are located near the Piazza di Spagna, Spanish Square, and they are dominated by the church of Trinità dei Monti with its twin towers.
Inside the church, several paintings that decorate the chapels. Here there are works by Daniele da Volterra, a pupil of Michelangelo.
The idea to connect this French church with the square belongs to the 17 century.
The Papacy didn’t agree with the French plans until when the Italian architect Francisco de Sanctis presented a design that satisfied also the French.
The Spanish Steps consists of 137 steps and it has an irregular structure that is his peculiarity, that, thanks to the numerous flights to Rome, everyone can admire.
The steps are very famous in Rome and they are always very crowded: tourists love to seat here, talk and have a rest, sometimes eating a sandwich, even if the Italian authority have banned visitors from eating while sitting on the steps.
During the 18th century, the Spanish Steps was also a meeting place for artists and models.
At the bottom of the Spanish Steps there is Piazza di Spagna, a triangular square so called because of the Spanish Embassy. In this area, you can also see the Fontana della Baracaccia, a fountain designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The fountain represents a small boat and it has been inspired by the flooding of the Tevere in 1598.
